Let’s start with the basics, Instagram is most peoples love/hate platform and due to the fact that its user base is growing at an incredible rate and it’s harder than ever to get your posts seen.
But, what is getting easier is the ability to control exactly what you see, without offending anyone in the process…How might you ask? Well, they are introducing a MUTE button and this is something I’m so very down for.
Okay, I’ll explain…
I hate offending people, it doesn’t matter if I don’t know you in real life and are unlikely to ever know you, I just don’t want to hurt your feelings. But, with everything there comes a point when I’m absolutely sick of reading your negative tweets, looking at your blurred pictures of dinner and tired of endless pictures of your child. That’s when I press one of two buttons, ‘unfollow’ or ‘mute‘ and within seconds I can make my social media a better place.
My ‘Explore’ feed is a curious place, It’s a rotation of delicious looking food, fabulous clothing and bare bottoms. I wanted my main feed to be upbeat, filled with a variety of people and content that I actually care about. Are we real-life friends? I want to like your posts, I want to watch your stories and the same applies to most people I follow online.
There’s a devil on my shoulder, telling me to have a mass unfollow of everyone that doesn’t bring me joy and create the perfect social media experience for myself. Afterall, isn’t it ONLY social media and not real life? I’m happy to cull people from Facebook, unfollow on Twitter and I appear to have what can only be described as a block with Instagram.
A moment of honesty here, when the mute button comes into play I’m going to have a gentle cull and mute anyone who has a negative impact on my well-being. I’m not sure for your picture book of perfect moments, I’m here for raw, honest, beautiful and fictional.

How do I mute or unmute someone’s story?
If you don’t want someone’s story to appear in the bar at the top of Feed, you can mute their story:
At the top of Feed, tap and hold the profile picture of the person whose story you’d like to mute
Select Mute [username]
How do I mute someone on my feed?
Once the feature is available to you, all you’ll need to do is tap the three dots at the top of a post or on someone’s profile hit mute, and you’ll be given the option to mute just their posts.
