In an exclusive interview published in this week’s Celebrity Secrets Stacey Solomon agreed to shoot and share some honest, un-airbrushed photos. Social media applauded, finally we were seeing a whole new level of honesty and I for one was able to relate and felt that she looked beautiful.

The world of celebrities, influencers and pop stars is and has always been about inspiration and selling the dream. Mainly by encouraging us to look up to unrealistic standards and to fall in love with individuals who live a life which is a world away from our everyday reality. For many years we’ve been following the ‘fantasy’ of the perfect, flawless body, with standards set by this multi-million-pound industry.

I think so many of us forget what real bodies look like when I log onto Instagram my ‘explore feed’ only shows what feels like an endless stream unrealistic beauty standards. It’s easy to disconnect from the fact of only around 5% of the population actually looks like this and even then, it’s often good lighting or genetics.

In the exclusive interview with Celebrity Secrets Stacey stated the following:

“Children are robbed of their childhood because they’re under pressure to look a certain way,” says Stacey. “Even if you ask 100 teenagers if they think a picture has been edited, and they all say ‘yes’, they’ll still want to look like that – as that’s what they think ‘pretty’ is.’ And that’s what we’ve got to eradicate.”

“By photographing her in her bikini we highlighted how easy it is to be airbrushed to ‘perfection’, while writing positive messages over her body further showcased her cause of showing fans that what they see on social media isn’t always the truth.” – Celebrity Secrets editor Claire Muffett-Reece

Gradually times are changing, more brands are reaching out to a varied range of sizes and ages in campaigns. Finally, companies like Boohoo are showing models without airbrushing, proving that being slim won’t eradicate stretch marks or cellulite and to show that as a matter of fact, it’s entirely normal.

Going forward I don’t want us to live in a world when we forget what being real is all about, we are faking our tans, eyelashes, eyebrows and nails, all in a quest to reach what can feel like impossible beauty standards. We need more people like Stacey to take a stand and show that it’s entirely possible to be influential and attractive, without the addition of computer-aided deception.
