Yoga : Take from practice, what you need..

I’m experiencing one of those stages in my life when everything feels like it’s moving very fast and I’m struggling to stay grounded. For me, this is where my yoga practice becomes one of the most important parts of my week.

I know for most people the mental rewards of Yoga are deeply personal; some may practice from a spiritual mindset and focus their lifestyle around this mantra whilst others use the time spent during practice as an escape. When my teacher asks us to think about what we want from our practice I’m often thinking

‘I want to free my mind and then my body, I want to feel uplifted and I want a little escape from my troubles or worries’

The best part? Is that my wishes come true and for an hour under the watchful eye of my new yoga teacher I unwind, slowly and thoughtfully practice new poses and sequences and I then feel set free.

Changing to a different teacher felt like a risky step for me, I’m not a fan of risk and I’m not always good with change but the first practice I’d joined was a little too strong for me at this tender stage in my journey. Attending a class for the absolute beginner has been rewarding for me, I put myself under less pressure and I feel like I’m gaining more by carefully learning from the beginning.

When I’m at work, I work to a monthly deadline, when I’m running then I naturally run against the clock, when I’m lifting weights I’m counting my repetitions. Then when I’m on my mat, cuddled up under a blanket and unwinding by listening to the smoothing word’s of my teacher I feel like I’m in the moment and I’m not rushing, counting or racing and it’s a beautiful moment.

When I was reading this month’s OM Yoga magazine I read an article called ‘Protect You’ and to quote

“We’re only here for a short time so never neglect you. Always prepare yourself for the next session on the daily treadmill of life and never leave yourself without enough energy”

It all just fell into place, I’m not superwoman and I can’t manage everything and be ‘perfect’ all the time and just like last week when I could *almost* touch my toes, I felt uplifted and all was calm again.

Om Shanti
