I Tried…Dermplaning My Face & This Is What Happened…

12 months ago I was the woman with a crazed phobia of needles and/or anything remotely sharp coming near me, fast forward and suddenly I’m paying for someone to give me a facial with a scalpel. You might wonder, what on earth happened and how did I land up in that kind of situation?

I’ll give you some background information…

Skincare has always been something of a mystery to me, whilst I’m religious about removing my makeup and always have been. After years of problem skin, I found that I was simply piling on the foundation and hoping for the best. One day, I made the choice to do some research and look into how I could take better care of my skin. I changed up my cleansing routine, started using Retinol (I’ll take about this more in a few months time) considered better UV protection, and booked in my first ever Dermaplaning treatment.

In simple terms, Dermaplaning is an advanced exfoliation procedure, rather than applying an exfoliating facial scrub, a beauty therapist will use a surgical scalpel to gently “shave” the skin’s surface. Which, as a result, removes the top layer of dead skin and any fine hairs on the face.

Unlike more advanced treatments, there’s no downtime, it’s entirely painless and relatively risk-free, well there’s a small chance you might get slightly nicked by the scalp but that’s unlikely. I was completely relaxed during the treatment and left feeling like my skin had been completely refreshed. The benefits include improved ease of makeup application and improved absorption of skincare products, I can’t vouch for the anti-aging claims and I think it’s highly unlikely to help with aging.

For the first 7 days following my first Dermaplaning treatment, I was advised to be extremely diligent with my SPF use and avoid using my Retinol serum. I was advised to use coconut oil, which turned out to be very detrimental and completely dried out my skin. I’m aware that it works for some people, but I think that my results would have improved had I avoided the use of coconut oil and a heavy SPF.

My advice would be to use a face friendly SPF, avoid sunbeds, avoid coconut oil and use less foundation for the first 7 days after the treatment. Would I have the treatment again? Sure, if I had a special occasion coming up, otherwise I’m not sure it would be hugely beneficial for me.

Have you ever tried Dermaplaning? How was it for you?
